Bible Discussions with Pastor Couch
Why does God allow suffering in the world?
How can one religion be “right” and the other “wrong”?
Why have so many wars been fought in the name of God?
Does science disprove Christianity?
These are just a few of the questions and doubts that believers and skeptics wrestle with today. Join Pastor Steve for 45 minutes on Wednesday nights after Fellowship Dinners to discuss the major objections to the Christian faith and explore the reasons for faith in Christ. A new topic will be introduced each week. Hope to see you there!

QFC Invites You!
QFC has started their fall quilting season for children in need. If you would like to be a part of this wonderful ministry come join them every Wednesday at 1 - 4 pm.
The festivities have already begun. Dr. Berkenkamp’s stone pots are on display in the fellowship hall (to be raffled off), a photo display appears in the hallway, commemorative towels are for sale, and an amazing photo album shows nearly all of the confirmation classes since 1922.
But, that’s not all! This Sunday you will be treated to a historical dramatization of the church’s history presented by the Sunday School at 9:15 a.m. See what it was like for the early arrivals from Russia to come over to this country. Enjoy what it must have been like to worship in German. Watch the church grow! Travel through 85 years as you watch a pictorial DVD presentation. At 10:30 (we will, hopefully, begin at 10:25), join in the festive celebration with guests, Rev. Dr. Dan Thimell (former pastor), Claudia Sutherland (former choir director), Shandra Stough (violinist), with our musicians and musical groups, and with the staff and the entire congregation. At around 12:00 noon, gather by the front church sign for a Zion Family Photo, and head for the picnic at Sander’s Park at 12:30. Great blessing awaits us!
Pastor Thimell (1979-1982) comes to us from his current position as professor at Oral Roberts University. Earning his B.A. in Religious Studies at Westmont College, a Master of Divinity from Fuller Theological Seminary and a Ph.D. from the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, Dan Thimell has used his teaching and preaching gifts in pastoring churches in California, North Dakota, Ohio, Idaho, Wyoming and Scotland. He currently serves in a shared ministry with three churches and teaches at Oral Roberts University as Associate Professor of Theological-Historical Studies in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Rev. Thimell has also written articles for several books and periodicals. In 1977, Dan married Adrian, and had four children: (Jeremy (29), Caleb (26), Cambria (24) and Karen (22). Adrian died in 2006. In 2007, Dan married Dee, a member of Zion Lutheran in Perry, Oklahoma. Let us warmly welcome Dan Thimell back to Zion this Sunday.

Rock Pot Creations on Raffle
As Many of you may know, Dr. Julius Berkenkamp was a wonderful mentor and long time friend to many members of our church. In 1967 “the Old Man Berkenkammp and his wife” built the home on the corner of 7th & Grace, adjacent from the old church on Grace Ave. From the building of this home, Berkenkamp began a ministry through creating rock-mosaic pottery from stones he hand picked and polished. Countless orphans and suffering people benefited from the money he received from his creations. Not a single penny he kept. In memory of our history, we will be raffling off some of his beautiful art work. If you have a pot you would like to donate please bring it to the church office. For those of you who would like one of these precious creations they will be on raffle starting this Sunday in the Fellowship. Tickets are $1.00 each or 6 tickets for $5.00. The money from this fundraiser will benefit Zion’s Mission Program.
Children’s Choir
Begins Wednesday, September 3rd at 6:15pm. I’m SO excited about the choir! We have some great fun songs lined up. Our first performance is on Sept. 14th! I look forward to seeing you all there!
Chancel Choir
The chancel choir will begin rehearsal on Wednesday, September 3rd at 7:00 pm in the Sanctuary. The choir is scheduled to sing on Sunday, September 14th and Nancy is asking that ALL members, past, present and future, please come to this practice!
Have you ever heard the phrase Coram Deo? It is a Latin phrase that literally means “before the face of God”. Since the 16th Century Reformation it has been used as a kind of “mission statement” for the Christian life, and it sums up how God calls us to live today. The idea is that God is real, and He is ever-present, all-knowing, all-powerful, and altogether good. We live every moment before His face (in His presence), and nothing is hidden from His sight (see Jeremiah 23:23-24). Therefore, every moment of life must be lived to bring Him glory. Every act of living must become an act of worship and devotion to this great, loving God who is always here in our midst. But there’s constant pressure from our culture to divide life into compartments – into what is “sacred” and what is “secular”. We are expected to put our Christian faith in the box marked “for private use only.” God calls us to a life which is much greater. He calls us to live out every breath of life Coram Deo. This prayer by A.W. Tozer cuts to the heart of what it means to live all of life before the face of God -
“O God, be thou exalted over my possessions. Nothing of earth’s treasures shall seem dear unto me if only Thou art glorified in my life. Be thou exalted over my friendships. I am determined that Thou shalt be above all, though I must stand deserted and alone in the midst of the earth. Be thou exalted above my comforts. Though it means the loss of bodily comforts and the carrying of heavy crosses, I shall keep my vow made this day before thee. Be thou exalted over my reputation. Make me ambitious to please thee even if as a result I must sink into obscurity and my name be forgotten as a dream. Rise, O Lord, into thy proper place of honor, above my ambitions, above my likes and dislikes, above my family, my health and even my life itself. Let me sink that thou may rise above. Ride forth upon me as thou did ride into Jerusalem mounted upon the humble little colt, and let me hear the children cry to thee, Hosanna in the highest.’ Amen.” (“The Pursuit of God”, A.W. Tozer. pp. 101-102)
My prayer for each of us in the weeks and months ahead is that we may experience the great joy and power of living each moment Coram Deo, and that through our lives His glory will be known over all the earth!

Ever feel like giving up in your job, your plans, your service for God, or even your marriage? Wisdom is knowing when to make a change in life. Quitting too soon can rob us of the blessing God wants to give us and give others through us. Throwing in the towel too early could jeopardize our welfare and happiness and possibly erase forever the possibility of a remarkable achievement that will never be realized. One of God’s creatures that knows this better than any other is the weaver bird of East Africa. There are 275 different kinds of weaver birds in the world and they all weave different kinds of nests. The yellow canary-like weaver of East Africa is our personal favorite. Our family would spend hours of enjoyment at Hunter’s Lodge in Kenya, just 150 miles NW of the coastal city of Mombasa, watching the amazing weaver birds create their houses. The weaver’s houses are round, about a foot in diameter, and are entered from the bottom. Although Mr. Weaver’s work looked fine to us, it was Mrs. Weaver who had to be pleased. Houses took a long time to build, yet Mr. Weaver’s work had to pass inspection or it was a “no go!” In fact, Mr. Weaver has been known to make up to twenty nests or houses before Mrs. Weaver would approve. But, when the approval came, life was blissful, a family was started and life was good. To Mrs. Weaver, a good house was well built, safe, roomy, enduring and user-friendly.
Learn this lesson from Mr. Weaver: Hold steady! Don’t give up! Be patient! The weaver bird is one of nature’s wonderful examples of a Biblical truth which, if followed, will bring us joy in our jobs, peace with our plans, satisfaction in our service for God and blessing in our marriages and families. First, let us hold steady in our WALK WITH GOD. Hebrews 12:1 encourages, “let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.” Second, let us hold steady in our PRAYER TO GOD. Ephesians 6:18 urges, “be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints.” Third, let us hold steady in our HOPE IN GOD. Again, Hebrews 10:23 admonishes, “let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.” Fourth, let us hold steady in our SERVICE FOR GOD. Paul stresses in Galatians 6:9 and 10, “let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.” Fifth, let us hold steady in our LOVE FOR GOD. Peter emphasizes (1 Peter 1:8 and 9), “Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.” This is why we hold steady. So, the next time you feel like giving up, remember the tenacity of the weaver bird and hold steady! There’s great blessing on the other end of our perseverance through the trials, struggles, problems and challenges of life.

SUMMER SUNDAY SCHOOL
Christian education movement was founded in 1780 by Robert Raikes (1735–1811). Raikes set up a school in England to teach working children the elements of Christianity and basic literacy and arithmetic on Sundays. The idea was taken up by other denominations, and by the 19th century Sunday schools were widespread.
Today, Sunday schools continue to teach children about the Christian faith and prepare them for later commitment if they choose to take it. Stories are told and activities take place. Each Sunday, here at Zion, children have the opportunity to build their foundation on Jesus Christ and His teaching. Join us each Sunday starting at 9:15 am for fun, games, lessons, and crafts! Kids, don’t forget to bring your parents too!

Dear Zion Church,
A warm “thank you” to my church family and friends for your prayers and concern during my recent surgery. Your many acts of kindness through phone calls, cards, visits, flowers and meals brought in were greatly appreciated. God’s Blessings to all,
Alice Lass

MISSIONARY MOMENTS
Emily (Bouchard) and Tony Ottaviano are headed for Uganda on July 8 for a two week missions trip to work with an organization called Village 2 Village which ministers to orphans. They will be doing a Vacation Bible School, some teacher training, sports, recreation and electrical work on the campus facilities. They are taking this trip to see if God may be calling them to full time service there in the near future. Their financial needs for this trip total $5,000. If you would like to contribute to this effort, you can make your check out to ZION and mark “For Emily & Tony” on the memo line. The money needs to be received by THIS Sunday, June 29. The missions committee has also approved a $1,000 gift to be sent to the Ottavianos. They ask us to pray for them that God will give them safety in travel and blessing in their ministry. Emily is daughter to Alan and Sara Bouchard and attended Zion with her parents before leaving for Africa in 2000.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Please join us Sunday, July 13th during the Sunday School hour and a portion of the Morning Worship service as the Navajo
mission team reports on God’s powerful work during this year’s Navajo mission trip.
