MISSIONARY MOMENTS
Emily (Bouchard) and Tony Ottaviano are headed for Uganda on July 8 for a two week missions trip to work with an organization called Village 2 Village which ministers to orphans. They will be doing a Vacation Bible School, some teacher training, sports, recreation and electrical work on the campus facilities. They are taking this trip to see if God may be calling them to full time service there in the near future. Their financial needs for this trip total $5,000. If you would like to contribute to this effort, you can make your check out to ZION and mark “For Emily & Tony” on the memo line. The money needs to be received by THIS Sunday, June 29. The missions committee has also approved a $1,000 gift to be sent to the Ottavianos. They ask us to pray for them that God will give them safety in travel and blessing in their ministry. Emily is daughter to Alan and Sara Bouchard and attended Zion with her parents before leaving for Africa in 2000.
MARK YOUR CALENDARS!
Please join us Sunday, July 13th during the Sunday School hour and a portion of the Morning Worship service as the Navajo
mission team reports on God’s powerful work during this year’s Navajo mission trip.
DID YOU KNOW?
Christian education movement was founded in 1780 by Robert Raikes (1735–1811). Raikes set up a school in Gloucester to teach working children the elements of Christianity and basic literacy and arithmetic on Sundays. The idea was taken up by other denominations, and by the 19th century Sunday schools were widespread.
Today, Sunday schools continue to teach children about the Christian faith and prepare them for later commitment if they choose to take it. Stories are told and activities take place. Each Sunday, here at Zion, children have the opportunity to build their foundation on Jesus Christ and HIS teachings. Join us each Sunday starting at 9:15 am for fun, games, lessons, and crafts! Kids, don’t forget to bring you parents too!

In Pastor's Words
Interruptions
You’re on your way out the door, and you’re late, when the phone rings! It’s your son who hasn’t called for a while and wants to catch up. You’ve just sat down to a nice hot meal when a knock comes at the door. It’s a stranger who needs assistance which could take a while. You’re driving down the highway to an important appointment when you come upon an accident and you’re the first one on the scene. Life is full of such interruptions. A study done in a Hewlett Packard lab in England revealed that their managers were being interrupted just over four times an hour and that the average interruption was two to eleven minutes. In only 55% of the cases, the manager resumed doing what he had done before. So, are interruptions always a nuisance and a bother?
“Interruptions” was the theme of almost every day that we lived in Africa. Without phone service, people just showed up. Students would come needing help with an assignment; visitors from afar would come for fellowship and tea; an accident would require a halt to whatever was happening so that the matter could be attended to quickly; someone would suddenly become sick with malaria and would need transportation to the hospital. One lunch time, a delicious hot meal was put in front of me in our dining room. My fork had just penetrated the savory dish when a knock came at the door. It was a woman I had never seen before. She was shabbily dressed with no shoes. I could understand her limited English as she, with great pain, explained that her daughter out in the country had just lost her first newborn. She needed money to get there. We were almost numb to the frequent requests for money for various reasons. My reserves were low, so my initial reaction was, “I’m sorry, but I can’t help you.” She thanked me and went on her way. As I sat down again to my nice hot meal, God pried me loose from my chair and I raced to the door to call the woman back. I knew God wanted me to help her. She was almost out of sight, but I got her attention and went to give her the 200 shillings she needed for bus fare. Interruptions can certainly be a nuisance if we see no purpose in them. However, interruptions can also be God’s divine appointments to spare us from some tragedy or to give us some opportunity to serve.
A study of the life of Christ shows that His earthly ministry seemed to be connected by interruptions. After healing a man with an unclean spirit (Mark 1:21-26), Jesus was suddenly interrupted by an entire city that demanded his attention (1:33). On another occasion he was interrupted in the midst of his teaching by four men carrying a paralyzed man (2:1-5). Later, Jesus was pursued and interrupted by a large crowd (3:7-9). Again, Jesus was interrupted by Jairus, then immediately interrupted again by a woman with a long term illness. For our Lord, interruptions were opportunities for ministry as they might well be for us. Some principles to note concerning Jesus’ response to interruptions, He always responded with grace, concern for everyone and purpose unchanged. There were times when Jesus initiated the interruptions himself and at other times He knew when to withdraw for prayer and rest.
May God give us wisdom in the interruptions of life to know when to respond, when to keep our focus unchanged, and when to withdraw for reflection, prayer and rest. Interruptions are part of life. We must deal with them in one way or another. May our response reflect the leading of His Spirit and our inner concern, as Christians, to show the kindness and love of Christ.

In Pastor's Words
Kickers, Pickers & Stickers
. . . . is the title of one of the first messages I ever preached. The gist of the sermon was a contrast between those who “kicked” and “picked” at things that were going on in the church as opposed to those who faithfully “stuck” to the church’s ministries and message despite some things they may not have liked. If the “kickers” and “pickers” got their way, and there were no “stickers,” the church and its vast influence upon this earth would be tragically reduced and humanity might well be thrust backward into barbarism. Circumstances, changes, challenges, and choices for some are often met with a negative, critical attitude that can leave the odor of discouragement and despair upon relationships and ministries. A woman left her house and went down to the plaza to do her errands. To her disgust, she found every shop malodorous. “Phew,” she said to the clerk in the grocery store, “it stinks in here.” Going next door to the dry-cleaners, she frowned at the odor. She stepped into the bank to make a deposit and found a sewer like smell, which she complained about as she cashed her check. Returning home, she realized she had stepped in something earlier in the day, and she herself had been carrying the smell around with her everywhere she went. When we can find nothing good about the circumstances, changes, challenges and choices of life, it may be that our own attitude needs a makeover.
“Kickers” and “Pickers” are grumblers whose glass is half empty, whose outlook or attitude about life is negative and whose “soul” condition might well be termed “critical condition.” As the children of Israel made their way to the Promised Land, Exodus passages describe them as “complainers.” They said to Moses, “because there were no graves in Egypt, have you taken us away to die in the wilderness” (Ex. 14:11)? “And the people complained against Moses, saying, “what shall we drink” (Ex. 15:24)? “Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and Aaron . . .” (Ex. 16:2). “ . . . and the people complained” (Ex. 17:3). The Bible strongly warns against a kicking or picking attitude against God’s servants, God’s work and God’s people. “And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel” (1 Cor. 10:10). Why was the punishment for grumbling so severe? It was because such complaining demonstrated both a lack of gratitude for past blessings and a lack of confidence in God’s wisdom, will and ways.
There is, of course, a justifiable judgment or “constructive” criticism required of all of us against evil or wrong doing. But kicking or picking (grumbling) against others, against ministers, ministries and God’s people is tantamount to a sin God will not tolerate. Why? Because it contributes to the destruction of His church, not the building of it. Do we really want to try and buck the will of Jesus Christ who said, “I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Grumbling discourages Christians from serving, it dissuades visitors from returning, it disagrees with God’s purposes, it distresses God’s workers and, finally, it plays right into the game plan of the enemy of our souls.
Think for a moment! What is your relationship like with the rest of your family, your church, your neighbors? Are you a “kicker” or “picker” who is carrying around a destructive “smelly” disposition that turns people away from you, or are you a “sticker,” who, despite dislikes or obstacles, does everything possible to edify and encourage others, to facilitate God’s work and to live in peace. Paul encourages, “be of one mind, live in peace. And the God of love and peace will be with you” (2 Cor. 13:11).

In Pastor's Words
Celebrate A Father’s Love
This week, fathers all over America will enjoy some special attention being showered on them by their kids of all ages with cards, calls, cook-outs, gifts and visits. Why all this attention? Because dads are special and our Christian dads are extra special because of their love shown to us in our “growing up” years. A Christian father’s love is demonstrated in his caring, disciplining, training and forgiving.
First, we celebrate our father’s love because he cares for us. Dad provides, guards and nurtures us in our formative years. Jesus alludes to this in Mathew 7:11 when he says, “If you (fathers), then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!”
Second, we celebrate our father’s love because he disciplines us. The writer of Hebrews (12:7-11) captures this thought in comparing God’s discipline with a human father’s discipline: “Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest or righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”
Third, we celebrate our father’s love because he trains us. Paul instructs, “Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord.” The writer of Proverbs states, “My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart, for they will prolong your life many years and bring you prosperity. Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man” (Proverbs 3:1-4).
Finally, we celebrate our father’s love because he forgives us. One woman shared this story of her father’s forgiveness. On a cold winter evening a man suffered a heart attack and after being admitted to the hospital, asked the nurse to call his daughter. He explained, “you see, I live alone and she is the only family I have.” When the nurse called the daughter, the daughter became very upset and pled, “you must not let him die! You see, Dad and I had a terrible argument almost a year ago and I haven’t seen him since. All these months I’ve wanted to go to him for forgiveness. The last thing I said to him was ‘I hate you.’” The daughter, crying, said, “I’ll be there in thirty minutes.” When the daughter arrived, the patient had already gone into cardiac arrest from which he did not recover. The nurse observed one of the doctors talking to the daughter outside the room and could see the pathetic look on her face. The nurse took the daughter aside and expressed her deep regret and sympathy. The daughter responded, “I never hated him, you know. I loved him and now I want to go see him.” When the nurse took her to the room, the daughter buried her face in the sheets as she said good-bye to her deceased dad. The nurse noticed a scrap of paper on the bedside table and handed it to the daughter. It read, “My dearest Jeanie, I forgive you. I pray you will also forgive me. I know that you love me. I love you, too. Daddy.”
Whether your dad is living here or living in heaven, celebrate his love this Sunday on Father’s Day.

STORY OF ELIJAH
The Sunday School teacher was carefully explaining the story of Elijah the Prophet and the false prophets of Baal. She explained how Elijah built the altar, put wood upon it, cut a steer in pieces, and laid it upon the altar. And then, Elijah commanded the people of God to fill four barrels of water and pour it over the altar. He had them do this four times. "Now, asked the teacher, "Can anyone in the class tell me why the Lord would have Elijah pour water over the steer on the altar?"
A little girl in the back of the room started waving her hand, "I know! I know!" she said, "To make the gravy!"

In Pastor's Words
Navajo Mission Trip
It’s hard to believe that we are only 1 week away from leaving for this year’s Navajo mission trip! This will be the sixth consecutive year that a group from Zion will have the blessing of taking Vacation Bible School to the children on the Navajo reservation in Blue Gap, Arizona. We are joining forces this year with Pastor Roger Dobson’s team from Victory Fellowship Church in Cody, and we are again expecting the Lord to do some amazing things!
On behalf of the entire mission team, I would like to thank each of you for your generous support of this ministry. You have been so generous with your prayers, donations of materials, and financial support. Without you, this ministry would never be possible. Thank you for your faithfulness. We are still in great need of your prayers. In fact, there is nothing that we need more than prayer! We come against constant spiritual attack, and we need constant prayer. Please remember our team daily in your prayers. In addition to the family prayer guide in the newsletter, here are some special prayer requests for each day of the trip….
Thurs., June 12 - The team meets at 7:00 p.m. to pack and pray. You are welcome to join us! Pray that we will be spiritually ready and that we remember to pack all necessary items.
Fri., June 13 – We depart after breakfast @ 8:00 a.m. We will drive to Grand Junction, Colorado. Pray for safety and protection of vehicles and trailers. Pray for unity among the Worland and Cody members of the team.
Sat., June 14 – We arrive in Blue Gap after dinner. Pray that we will have strength, energy, and efficiency in setting-up our tent city and getting settled-in for the evening.
Sun., June 15 – After attending a Navajo church service, we set up for VBS and hit the road to distribute VBS flyers door to door around Blue Gap. Pray for safety, blessing, and joy as we make these last preparations.
Mon., June 16 – Thurs., June 19 VBS each morning. Pray each day for the Holy Spirit to work mightily through the Bible School and each team member. Pray for protection against the many attacks of Satan. Pray for dry weather and calm wind, protection against illness, and unity.
Thurs., June 19 – After lunch, we pack everything and travel to Durango, Colorado. Pray for traveling blessings, endurance, and protection against illness.
Fri., June 20 – Today the team gets a day of rest. Some will go hiking, some will go rafting, and some will go shopping in Durango or ride the Durango – Silverton railroad. We will drive to Montrose, Colorado in the evening. Pray for a day of refreshment, rest, and good health.
Sat., June 21 – Today we will get an early start and drive home to Worland. We hope to be home by 9:00pm. Pray for safety and blessing for our trip home.
Blessings in Christ – Pastor Steve
