In Pastor's Words
Me, A Martyr?
If we thought for a minute that our profession of faith in Christ would lead to certain martyrdom, it might cause our heart to skip a beat or send a chill down our spine. Our understanding of “martyr” is that it refers to persecution and death for one’s bold and unwavering witness for Jesus Christ. But, did you know that “martyr” did not always mean death for the faith? The Greek word for “martyr” is martus, meaning “witness.” Early Christians were witnesses and witnesses were martyrs in the truest sense. As Christianity spread outward from its Middle Eastern base in every direction, and met with opposition and the persecution and death of its proponents, the meaning of “martyr” gradually changed in time to only meaning “death for the faith.”
One famous martyr, St. Justin, who lived in the early part of the second century, was such a defender of the Christian faith, that he was beheaded for his unflinching witness in 165 AD by Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. His staunch witness for Christ earned him the given surname, Martyr. It was an age of martyrs. John Foxe, in his book, Foxe’s Book of Martyrs, written in the late 16th century, details the accounts of numerous persecutions and deaths of Christian witnesses down through the ages to his time. The book has been amended several times since to include the martyrdom of thousands and thousands of Christians in the succeeding centuries. In his book, John Foxe recounts the thousands martyred under the first persecutions under Nero, the exhibition of martyred Christians during the gladiatorial games in the Coliseum and in other arenas, the persecution and deaths of John Wyckliffe and William Tyndale, burned at the stake for their faith, the persecution of Martin Luther and the martyrdom of so many others in history.
On the evening of March 17, 2004, while I served as the Administrator of Missionary Relations at Africa Inland Mission in New York, word came to me from the heart of Africa that two of our missionaries, Warren and Donna Pett, had been murdered at their home in Uganda. While the killers were never caught, to my knowledge, witnesses attested to the fact that they died for their witness to Jesus Christ. Warren and Donna joined that long list of Christian martyrs down through the ages. It was my duty to be the first to convey this news to the family in Wisconsin. As recently as April 20, 1999, Cassie Bernall, seventeen, was in the library at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colorado, studying the Bible as she did every day at lunch when, suddenly, she heard shooting erupt. A gunman entered the room. Cassie knelt and prayed, angering the attacker. He approached her and, sarcastically, asked her if she believed in God. She paused and then said, “yes,” to which the gunman asked “why,” and then shot her. She is a martyr for Christ, a “witness” who stood her ground as a Christian under the greatest duress. Incidents of Christian martyrdom occur frequently around the world which are never reported in the world press.
We as Christians are martyrs in the strictest sense of the word if we hold firm to our faith. We may never be called on to endure “martyrdom,” in the widest understanding of the term, but we may. But as true believers in Christ, we have no choice. St. Jerome said in the 4th century, “The Church of Christ has been founded by shedding its own blood, not that of others; by enduring outrage, not by inflicting it. Persecutions have made it grow; martyrdoms have crowned it.” You ask, “me, a martyr?” Says the Bible, “if we died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him. If we disown him, he will also disown us” (2 Timothy 2:11,12).

In Pastor's Words
"We Are What We Read!"
Anonymous
Physically speaking, “we are what we eat,” insist some. But to a greater degree, our character and world view may well be shaped by what we read and study. Our graduates, from both high school and institutions of higher learning, have been required to read volumes of assigned books, periodicals and other reading matter which are designed to help them launch their lives in a direction that will eventually bring them a measure of enjoyment, expertise in gainful employment and fulfillment in life. Up till now reading has been required. After graduation the temptation may be to allow reading time to slip for a variety of reasons. In fact this is exactly what happens to a majority of Americans when they leave high school. Statistics show that 1) 58% of Americans have never finished reading a book, 2) 80% of the books sold are read by only 12% of the population, and 3) only 1% of Christians ever visit a Christian bookstore!
A book entitled The Royal Path of Life, written in the 19th century, contained a chapter defining four kinds of readers. The first type is like the hour glass, with reading being like sand running in and out and leaving no lasting impression behind. The second type is like a sponge which imbibes everything and returns it in the same state, only a little dirtier. The third type is like a sieve, allowing all of the good and pure information to pass through, collecting only the dregs and refuse that remains. And, finally, the fourth is like the miner in a diamond mine, casting aside all that is worthless to obtain the pure gem. Some years ago, George and Alec Gallup set out to discover what makes some people more successful than others. Using the polling techniques that have made them famous, they wrote a book entitled, The Great American Success Story. Their findings showed that successful people read and that reading was essential because it “makes a person ready to converse. It seems to be a key to finding contentment. These people have a broad knowledge and feel they can shift over to another field or chain of thought . . . I think reading would be a very big boost to self-esteem because then you have more information with which to make evaluations and decisions.” Warren Wiersbe, one time pastor of the Moody Memorial Church in Chicago, stated, “if you spent thirty minutes a day studying any subject . . . within ten years you’d have the equivalent of a Ph.D. in that subject.”
While secular reading in the disciplines can certainly feed our learning, confidence, direction and bring a degree of satisfaction in life, of greater importance is that reading which will feed the soul. Ruth Bell Graham encouraged, “Read, read, Read! Use the Bible as home base, but vary your diet.” In 2 Timothy 4:13, the Apostle Paul who had been to heaven and back, had written half the New Testament, and had seen the Lord, instructed Timothy , “when you come, bring . . . my scrolls, especially the parchments.” And, so our encouragement to all of you who are graduating, let not your reading skills slip. Yes, spend time reading in your area of interest, but spend time with God each day in His Word. By doing so, the Psalmist testified, “I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11) and “your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path” (Psalm 119:105). If we are what we read, let’s pursue reading that encourages, guides, teaches and builds character for a life of joyful obedience and service to God.

We Appreciate You Mom
The child was a typical four-year-old girl -- cute, inquisitive, bright as a new penny. When she expressed difficulty in grasping the concept of marriage, her father decided to pull out his wedding photo album, thinking visual images would help. One page after another, he pointed out the bride arriving at the church, the entrance, the wedding ceremony, the recessional, the reception, etc. "Now do you understand?" he asked. "I think so," she said, "is that when mommy came to work for us?"
College Cookie Thank You’s
Ladies of Zion,
Thank you so much for the awesome cookies.

My friends and I really enjoyed them.
Thank you again for thinking of me.

In Pastor's Words
My Child, What Can I Give You?
I should like to give you everything so that you lack for nothing, not even one single desire, but I know that for want of many things I have come to be satisfied with what I have and to think of others and their needs.
I should like to give you a life full of fun and games, but I know that because of many “chores” and responsibilities of my youth, I have learned to be responsible.
I should like to protect you from all the errors of your youth, but I know that because of my failures, I have learned to make better decisions.
I should like to give you a profession of wealth or importance, but I realize that man is truly happy only when he fulfills the purpose for which God has created him. What then, my child, can I give you that would be of any real value?
I give you my love, which means that I accept you, without reservations, just as you are and will be.
I give you my personal presence in order that you will have the security you need during your childhood.
I give you my ears, in the sense that I will never bee too busy to listen to you—sometimes never uttering even one word.
I give you opportunities to work so that you might learn to do it without shame and come to enjoy the satisfaction of work well done.
I give you my counsel only when it is necessary or you ask for it so that you might avoid some of the mistakes I have made.
I give you my consolation when you have failed or feel discouraged but I will not always protect you from the consequences of your sins.
I give you instructions in the way of the Lord so that when you are old, you will never depart from it.
I give you my daily prayers that the Lord will keep you and guide you in such a way that you, my child, will be a man or woman who will serve and glorify your Heavenly Father.
This I give you with all my love.
Your Mother, Lydia Lightner, Home Living, May 1980.
